Monday, September 23rd, is the first day of autumn. The first day of autumn has twelve hours of daylight and twelve hours of darkness. This day is also known as the Autumnal Equinox. The term equinox comes from the Latin words aequus, meaning equal and nox, which means night. In the United States and the rest of the northern hemisphere, the first day of the autumn season is the day of the year when the Sun crosses the celestial equator moving southward (on September 22nd or 23rd). Many cultures around the world hold feasts and celebrate festivals and holidays to mark the September equinox.
