Kobe Bryant was born on August 23, 1978, in Philadelphia. His family then moved to Italy in 1984 when he was 6 years old.  They moved to Italy because his father, Joe Bryant, could play for a professional Italian league. In Italy, he learned how to do many things, like learning to speak Italian, but most importantly that’s where he learned what he needed to know about basketball. Skills like shooting layups, screening, shooting, etc.  He started playing on a kids’ basketball team there. Kobe grew up with his elder sisters Shaya and Sharia Bryant. Kobe also loved to play soccer while loving basketball.

In 1991 Kobe and his family moved back to Philadelphia when he was 13 years old. That’s where Kobe attended Lower Merion High School, and led the school for 4 state championships.  He got recognized as the top high-school basketball player of the country. Then, he declared he was going to the NBA straight out of high school. The draft came and he was drafted by the Charlotte Hornets with the 13th overall pick in 1996. He only stayed on the team for a week, and then the Hornets traded Kobe to the Los Angles Lakers. He did not start when he first got on the Lakers, but soon became one of the best basketball players to ever play in the NBA.
