What is black history month? Black history month is an annual celebration of achievements by African Americans and a time for recognizing the central role of blacks in U.S. history. What did Percy Julian do that changed history? Percy Julian was an African American chemist and was a pioneer in the chemical synthesis of medical drugs from plants. He was even the first African American chemist to be part of the National Academics in Science. He synthesized physostigmine for treatment of glaucoma, he synthesized cortisone for the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis, and he created fire extinguisher foam for gasoline and oil fires. There are several ideas that Percy Lavon Julian had that changed history.
