On Saturday, October 27th, 2018, 46-year-old Robert Bowers entered the Tree of Life synagogue and opened fire. He shot and killed 11 people, and injured 6, four of which were police officers. According to a federal law enforcement official, Bowers made anti-Semitic (which means anti-Jewish) comments during the attack and targeted Jews on social media. He surrendered on Monday morning after the 20-minute assault, and is charged with 11 counts of using a firearm to commit murder, and multiple counts of two hate crimes. He will appear in court on the 29th of October, and may be charged with the death penalty if he is seen guilty for a hate crime. All the victims were over the age of 54.

The attack is considered to be the deadliest on the Jewish community, in American history, according to The Anti-Defamation League. Calls were made to the Allegheny County emergency operations center at 9:54 AM about an active shooter. After Bowers was arrested, police recovered a rifle and three handguns. It’s believed Bowers acted alone, and police had no information on Bowsers prior to the shooting.

Robert Bowers made very suspicious and disgusting posts on Gab, a social media platform. Bowers made one last chilling post five minutes before the police were contacted; “I can’t sit by and watch my people get slaughtered. Screw your optics, I’m going in.” Bowers also claimed in another post that Jews were helping transport members of the migrant caravans, and he believed that those in the migrant caravans were violent because they were attempting to leave countries that had a lot of violence. He even called them invaders. Gab has stated that they strongly disagree with Bowers, and even turned in the account to the FBI.

Whether you think Bowers deserves a death penalty or not, we can all agree he is a horrible and stupid man. Violence is never the answer, and we remember the 11 victims and their families.
