Tuesday, April 2 is National Autism Awareness Day. This is a day to recognize, research, and fundraise for treatments for those who have autism. On this day we also recognize how autism diagnoses have changed over time. People were only diagnosed with autism if they had severe symptoms and were institutionalized. It was thought that autism was a result of poor parenting or vaccinations, but, thanks to many awareness campaigns, we were able to find the truth about autism and understand it more. Today, autism is known as a disorder that has a broad range of conditions that are characterized with challenges of social skills, behavior, and verbal/non-verbal communication. Some forms of autism are Asperger’s syndrome, pervasive development disorder, and autistic disorder.  Donate to charities such as The Autism Society of America or others to start off this day and make an impact on lives.
